Meet the Youth Council of 2018!

Carson T.

Carson came to Ottawa after she graduated from high school in Quebec. She had lived in a small town for her whole life which is what encouraged her to learn about the rest of the world and its history. She is now continuing her studies at the University of Ottawa for the Bachelor of Conflict Studies and Human Rights. Her goal is to eventually travel the world and help people as she experiences firsthand how our history can influence our present.

Emily graduated in 2017 from Carleton University with a degree in History and a minor in Art History. She joined the Youth Council two years ago to learn more about Ottawa’s history and about the BYTOWN MUSEUM. This fall, she is planning to attend Algonquin College for the Event Management Program. In her free time, she enjoys watercolour painting, walking, and volunteering within the museum, as well as with other heritage organizations.

Rowan C.-D.

Rowan is originally from Calgary, Alberta. Going into her third year at Carleton University, Rowan is studying a double major in History and Religion. She wanted to join the Youth Council to gain experience in a museum, and expand her knowledge of the history of Ottawa. Her hobbies include volunteering, reading, and hiking.

Lynsay O’H.

Lynsay is a third year History/Archaeology student at Carleton University. She is from the Ottawa area, however her love of history sparked when she lived in Rome, Italy for three years. She joined the Youth Council to learn more of Ottawa’s fascinating history as well as to gain museum experience. Her hobbies include reading historical fiction and writing. She hopes to one-day work for Heritage Canada and participate in many archaeological digs.

Jonah E.

Jonah has always lived in Ottawa and grew up visiting the city’s museums. He enjoyed taking history in high school and decided to major in History at Carleton University. Jonah now spends his time between school, re-enacting with the 100th Regiment, building model airplanes, and helping out at local museums, notably the BYTOWN MUSEUM, on various projects. He hopes to one day get a job where he can continue learning and sharing history.

 

Aska S.

Aska is in her senior year of high school. She is from the Ottawa area. She wanted to join the Youth Council to learn more about Ottawa’s history and gain museum experience. Her hobbies include photography, visual arts, graphic design, and volunteering. She hopes one day to go to Algonquin College and get an advanced degree in graphic design.

Ahmed N.B.

Ahmed has recently moved from Montreal to Ottawa and is now excited to explore this new colourful city. Passionate about history and literature, he joined the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council to have an impact on his community, as well as to satisfy his thirst for knowledge. Between school, work, and volunteering, Ahmed enjoys his free time playing his favourite musical instrument, the piano.

Emily Z.

Graduating this year from high school, Emily decided to join the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council to expand her historical awareness, to increase her community impact, and to simply make friends. Growing up in the Ottawa area, she has always had a fascination for the hidden wonders that Ottawa has held. Emily is passionate about history and enjoys competitive swimming, art, computers, and working as a lifeguard.

Kaya R.

Kaya is a grade ten student. She joined YoCo this year to learn and share her knowledge about Ottawa’s history. Through this experience, she hopes to learn more about herself as well as what she would like to study in school. In her free time, she likes baking, learning languages, and painting!

Loic K.

Loic is from a tiny little country called Burundi, which is in the heart of Africa and is currently in his senior year in secondary. He is hoping to get into the Software Engineering Program at the University of Ottawa after he graduates. Loic joined the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council to learn more about Ottawa’s history, as well as to obtain more knowledge about his passion for history and art. In addition, Loic saw the opportunity to develop his leadership and creativity skills, as well as the chance to meet other members within his community. As for his hobbies, he loves listening to music and is hoping to learn how to play the piano in the future. You can also find him watching episodes of How to Get Away with Murder and Suits.

Troiana C.

Originally from Hamilton, Troiana came to Ottawa to achieve her undergraduate degree in Health Sciences. Currently in her second year at the University of Ottawa, Troiana decided to join the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council in order to take advantage of the opportunity of living in a city rich with history. She hopes to be able to reach other youth and locals who want to learn about Ottawa. She spends her time studying, volunteering, and painting.

Laura M.

Laura is a grade 12 student who is passionate about history and hopes to pursue it in university. She joined the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council to gain experience within a museum environment and to meet other who are interested in history.

Kylie L.

Kylie is a grade 12 student and has been interested in history for many years. In the future, Kylie is looking into pursuing history at university. She joined the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council in order to gain knowledge and skills in history and to see if the museum field is right for her.

Kabwe M.

Kabwe is in her senior year of high school and she wants to study Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She is originally from Zambia, but moved to Canada in 2016. She joined the BYTOWN MUSEUM’s Youth Council because she enjoys learning about history and she wants to meet and connect with new people. Her goal in the future is to visit as many places and countries as she can, as well as to be successful in her future studies.

Shayda Y.

Shayda is originally from BC and moved to Ottawa to pursue an undergraduate degree in History. She joined the Bytown Museum’s Youth Council to gain perspective about working in museums, as well as to meet like-minded people with a passion for history and volunteering. Her hobbies include reading, video games, and tabletop games.
